Goalkeeper & outfield player assessment guide

A practical football coaching framework for goalkeepers and outfield players. Assess the skills that matter for each player type, write session notes, set development targets and record progress over time.

How to use this guide

  1. Observe the player across multiple sessions and matches rather than one snapshot.
  2. Use the checklist for the player's coaching category: goalkeeper or outfield. Rate each skill from 1 (developing) to 5 (advanced), and record the date and session notes.
  3. Highlight the two lowest-scoring categories as the next development focus.
  4. Re-score every 6–8 weeks to measure progress and keep the assessment objective.

Rating scale

1Developing

Inconsistent or under pressure; needs coaching focus.

2Emerging

Shows the skill but lacks consistency under match pressure.

3Competent

Performs reliably in most situations.

4Proficient

Consistent in high-pressure moments and matches.

5Advanced

Can model the skill for others; match-winning reliability.

Make it actionable

Run the checklist every half term

Regular scoring turns opinion into evidence and shows progress to parents and players.

Record every player's progress

Save skill ratings and typed or voice session notes on each player's profile, whether they are a goalkeeper or an outfield player.

Set two targets at a time

Focus on the weakest categories first. Share the targets with the player so they own the improvement.
